Why tronche exists
Origin
Every app needs faces. Whether it's profiles, comments, or chat, a unique visual identifier makes the experience feel personal. So we built tronche: avatars, nothing like you.
Inspiration
The amazing boring-avatars project philosophically answered this need perfectly: generate unique avatars from a name, no upload required.
But in practice, it fell short for our use case:
- No Nuxt or Vue module available for easy integration
- The API service requires immediate payment, no free tier for prototyping
- Very restrictive domain management: only 1 production domain and 1 development domain
- Any change requires waiting 24 hours to take effect

Our solution
Faced with a paid API that wasn't fit for purpose, we did what any reasonable developer would do: we built our own. tronche is open-source, self-hostable, and shipping with a REST API, a Nuxt module, and a Vue component. Zero friction, maximum avatars.
